Tree Ordinances & Design Standards
February 4, 2010
2:00 - 3:00pm CST

As urban areas expand, communities want to preserve open lands and environmentally sensitive areas and mitigate environmental problems related to development. Often a tree ordinance is a key aspect of the framework for managing community forest and, in general, public resources. It provides legal authority for defining municipal responsibility for public and private trees, conducting forestry programs, passing regulations, and setting minimum standards for management. The intersection of nonprofit community leaders, government agencies, and experienced land-use professionals is where effective tree ordinances, land preservation strategies, and environmental mitigation plans often begin to help ensure that their communities develop sustainably.

The Value of Shade: Energy and Climate Impacts

October 15, 2009
12:00-1:00pm CST
Alliance for Community Trees (ACT)
National Webcast

Concern about carbon emissions and associated climate change, along with rising fuel costs, have made energy conservation a pressing public policy issue. Increased planting of urban shade trees has been suggested as one way of conserving energy by reducing the demand for heating and cooling. Indeed, some utility companies offer customers free or reduced-cost trees. However, no studies of utility billing data had shown that trees reduce energy consumption.

Please plan to join us, on September 16th at 1:00 PM (Eastern), for the September UNRI Informational Webcast, which will feature “Understanding Urban Natural Resources: A Closer Look at Geospatial Data”, with Dr. David Nowak nd Phillip Rodbell, of the USDA Forest Service.

One of the most useful tools that is available to urban natural resource managers, policy makers, researchers and planners is geospatial information, which can be used to examine the structure, function and value of the resources found in a city or town, county, state or region. Today, the availability of information and data is unprecedented and the tools that can be used to assess, analyze, and present this information are becoming simpler to use, affordable and can tell a story in a images, graphics and maps.

This informational webcast is designed to present a dynamic, interactive overview of the latest tools that are being used to prepare timely, accurate and easy to understand reports on the natural resources found in a community or region. Also, sources of information and datasets will be outlined, as well as how this information can be used to address your assessment, analysis or management needs. Also, i-Tree Vue, a new, interactive tool for data analysis and reporting will be introduced.

'Planning' Your Way to the Best Urban Forest

The Alliance for Community Trees will be hosting the webcast, 'Planning' Your Way to the Best Urban Forest, August 20 from 12 noon to 1:00 PM CST. The informal training provides an opportunity for community forestry practitioners to learn about successful programs and how they can be adapted to their communities. The August webcast features planners Jim Schwab, American Planning Association (Chicago, IL) and Cheryl Kollin, VP for Urban Ecosystems, American Forests (Washington, DC).

The physical framework of a community is called its infrastructure, and can be divided into two types: green and gray. Gray infrastructure refers to areas of buildings, roads, utilities, and parking lots; green infrastructure includes areas covered with trees, shrubs, and grass. A community can accurately measure its green infrastructure and calculate the public utility functions these areas perform. For local public policymakers making decisions affecting urbanization, the problem is not solely about planting more trees, but rather about balancing gray and green infrastructure.

Street Tree Master Planning - Webcast

Join the Urban Natural Resources Institute on Wednesday, August 19th at 12 noon (Central) for a webcast introducing a new tool for urban forestry. Perhaps now more than ever for many communities, there’s a great opportunity to reevaluate and redesign streetscapes. Invasive pests and slim budgets are taking a toll on existing street trees and re-teaching us lessons about the dangers of dependency on a few species and not specifying the right plants for various sites.

An exciting, new publication, “The Road to a Thoughtful Street Tree Master Plan” was co-authored by Ken Simons, a landscape architect, and Gary Johnson, a professor of urban forestry, as a primer and guide of sorts for communities that have the opportunity to develop or change, yet may not have the expertise or background to do it effectively.

This webcast will serve as an introduction to the primer and its potential as a resource for communities that are striving to create more resilient street tree designs and programs

Webcast

February 18, 2009 - 12:00 PM (Central)

Upcoming Webcast Features “Trees and Ice Storms”,

“Trees and Ice Storms: Developing Ice Storm Resistant Urban Tree Populations“ will feature Richard Hauer, Ph.D., from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, who will introduce the issue of  making urban forests less susceptible to the damage from ice storms and winter weather events.  Along with fires and wind, ice storms are a frequent and major natural disturbance factor in many areas of the country. Likewise ice storms are responsible for deaths and injuries of people and cause dramatic damage and tree loss to urban forests. Ice storms   annually result in millions of dollars in   loss, and potentially billions of dollars in   losses for extreme and widespread ice storms. Damage to electric distribution   systems, blocked roadways, and property   damage from fallen trees and limbs pose safety concerns and disrupt normal community functions.   This timely topic will be discussed by one of the foremost experts in this area, and this webcast will help to bring you up to date on the latest research findings and outline resource materials that will help you prepare for the next catastrophic event. Trees and Transportation Webcast - July 17, 2008

The Alliance for Community Trees will be hosting the webcast, Trees and Transportation, on July 17 from 12 noon to 1:00 PM CST. The informal training provides an opportunity for community forestry practitioners to learn about successful programs and how they can be adapted to their communities.

Trees and landscape features that are located within the public right-of-way and adjacent to roadways in urban environments are often perceived by transportation officials as a safety risk. Tree plantings may be limited or prohibited by public works or transportation professionals due to concerns. But there are many community benefits that result from having roadside landscapes. Armed with that information, advocates of urban forestry are encouraging roadside plantings that balance transportation mobility, accessibility needs, public welfare, and community livability.
